They’re perfect for a unique and easy treat for Valentine’s day. Of course red velvet cake is often connected to Valentine’s Day, but these cookies are even easier to whip up. They fit the Valentine’s theme perfectly with their chocolatey flavour from the cocoa powder, (and the white chocolate chips if you add them). They’re also the perfect colour for the holiday too!

For me personally, I prefer cookies over cake, so I really love these cookies. They have all the amazing flavours of red velvet cake, but in a more convenient and shareable cookie format. They’re perfect with or without the white chocolate chips, but I do highly recommend them. It’s also up to you whether or not you want to add the cream cheese frosting. You can either use store bought frosting or you can use my recipe for cream cheese frosting.

What do I need to make red velvet cookies?

  • Flour
  • Cocoa powder
  • Baking powder
  • Baking soda

  • Softened unsalted butter
  • Brown sugar — Ideally light brown, but you could use other kinds as well. Just be aware the taste may be a little different.
  • Granulated sugar (white)
  • A large egg
  • Buttermilk — To make your own, simply add 1 tsp of lemon juice or vinegar to regular milk.
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Red food colouring
  • White chocolate chips — These are optional, but highly recommended.
  • Cream cheese frosting — This is optional.

Notes:

  • Be careful not to over mix the dough.
  • Make sure you measure the flour with the correct method.
  • You can store the cookies in a sealed container for up to three days at room temperature. If using cream cheese frosting, make sure to refrigerate the cookies to prevent the frosting from souring.
