This apple butter is such a delicious treat that’s so nice to have on hand for snacking. It’s made with just a handful of ingredients and slow cooked for 12 hours. Once the apples have finished cooking down, they’re blended to create apple butter, then it’s bottled and refrigerated.

The smell that the apple butter releases while it’s cooking throughout the day is outstanding and an added bonus. Its scent will permeate the house, creating such a cozy and relaxing sensation. Naturally, this recipe is ideal for the fall and winter months, but you can really make it any time of year.
Since you will get a lot of apple butter from this, it can make a really nice gift. This is especially useful if you’re worried about being able to use it all up while it’s still good. I recommend putting the apple butter in sterilized mason jars, but the size is up to you. The standard size is great if you’re planning on keeping it all or if you just want to give away one jar. Otherwise, smaller jars (like in the picture above) are perfect for making lots of nice gifts to give away.
I love pairing the apple butter with cheese (especially cheddar or brie), but you can enjoy it in many different ways. You can simply spread it on bread/toast or you can turn it into a tasty sandwich by adding cheese or peanut butter. It also goes nicely on crackers with cheese too. You can even spread it on top of some pancakes or waffles for a unique flavour boost.
What do I need to make apple butter?
- Apples — I usually use Fujii apples. Honeycrisp is another good choice too. The choice is up to you, but for tarter apples, you may need to add more sugar.
- Apple cider vinegar
- Brown sugar
- Granulated sugar (white)
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Clove
- Allspice
How to make apple butter:
1. Peel and cut up the apples into small cubes.
2. Place all the apples, apple cider vinegar, sugars (brown and white), and spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, allspice) into the slow cooker. Stir the mixture well to ensure everything is distributed throughout.

3. Place the lid on the slow cooker. Then cook on high for one hour.
4. After the first hour, reduce the temperature to low. Stir the apples. Then cook for an additional 10 hours, stirring every 2 hours.
5. Remove the lid from the slow cooker and continue to cook for one more hour on low heat.

6. Turn off the slow cooker. Blend the apples with an immersion blender. Then spoon the apple butter into sterilized jars/containers and refrigerate.

Notes:
- You can refrigerate the apple butter in sealed sterilized jars for up to three weeks.
- Feel free to adjust the sugar quantities based on personal preference or if you opt for a different kind of apple.
